Australia offers new pledge of AU$ 3.25 million

The Government of Australia has made a new pledge for AU$ 3.25 million to the international component of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC).

Australian Minister for Foreign Affairs, Senator Bob Carr announced the new pledge on 18 June 2013. "The ECCC hearings play a vital role in delivering justice for the Cambodian people, who endured unspeakable suffering at the hands of the Khmer Rouge”, Senator Carr said in an official statement.

With this new pledge, Australia’s total financial assistance to the ECCC will reach AU$ 23 million. Having supported the court since its inception, Australia is the second largest international donor to the ECCC.

“We are very grateful for the generous and continuous support offered by the Australian Government.  This contribution comes at a time when the Trial Chamber is in the final stages of the evidence hearings in Case 002/01, and will ensure that the international component of the ECCC will be able to continue its operations without interruption”, said Acting Director of the Office of Administration HE  Kranh Tony and Deputy Director Mr. Knut Rosandhaug in statement.
