The Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) is a domestic court supported with international staff, established in accordance with Cambodian law. Under the terms of Agreement between the United Nations and the Royal Government of Cambodia, the Extraordinary Chambers will bring to trial senior leaders of Democratic Kampuchea and those who were most responsible for the crimes and serious violations of Cambodian penal law, international humanitarian law and custom, and international conventions recognized by Cambodia, that were committed during the period from 17 April 1975 to 6 January 1979. The ECCC receives technical assistance from the United Nations Assistance to the Khmer Rouge Trials (UNAKRT). The ECCC and UNAKRT are seeking to establish a JOINT ROSTER for the functions of: INTERPRETER/TRANSLATOR (Khmer/French) (10/ROSTER/CMS/04) Under the overall supervision of the Chief of the Court Management Section and the direct supervision of the Head of the Interpretation and Translation Unit (ITU), with professional and technical assistance from the Senior Coordinator, ITU, the incumbent shall perform the following duties: - Provides simultaneous and/or consecutive interpretation services from Khmer into French and vice-versa during meetings, training, workshops, hearings, trials, etc, with a high standard of accuracy, consistency and faithfulness to the spirit, style and nuances of the original message;
- Observes the established terminology and usage, and ensure, as far as possible, consistency with the terminology and usage of other interpreters working in the ITU;
- Uses all reference, information and consultation resources relevant to the assignment and carry out any research required;
- Translates various Khmer Rouge documents and/or legal texts from Khmer into French when s/he is not interpreting, in due compliance with deadlines and appropriate terminology;
- Identifies and submits new terminology material for the consideration of revisers.
- Utilizes electronic audio systems for providing simultaneous interpretation;
- Performs other associated duties as required.
Successful candidates will be placed on a roster from which future consultancies for UNAKRT and staff positions in ECCC will be recruited. QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE: - Advanced university degree in translation, modern languages, law or a related field or an equivalent diploma;
- 5 years of relevant experience in interpretation or translation from Khmer into French;
- Excellent computer skills, and typing skills of Khmer (Unicode) and French.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills, teamwork and professionalism;
- Commitment to continuous learning.
LANGUAGES: - Khmer, English and French are the working languages of the ECCC. For the functions advertised, fluency in written (Unicode) and spoken Khmer and French is required. Knowledge of English is an advantage.

- Reports regularly to the Head of ITU and/or ITU Senior Coordinator on the performance of the translators;
- Identifies new terminology material and submits it for the consideration of colleagues;
- Performs other functions as required.
