200 students from Heng Samrin Tbong Khmom University, Tbong Khmom province, visit a study organized by the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC), March 23, 2023. The purpose of this study tour is to make students aware of the achievements of the ECCC and the causes of the trials of crimes committed during the Democratic Kampuchea regime and the peace process in Cambodia.
San Kong Heng, lecturer who leads the group, said that this study tour is very important for all students. He added that all students have learned more about the trial on former Khmer Rouge leaders and the achievements of this trial. He continued that his students also gained a lot of knowledge about the brutal torture, massacre of Cambodians during the Khmer Rouge genocide and the process of peace building, the history of Samdech Techo Hun Sen's struggles and his sacrificed to liberate the nation and bring peace for the whole nation.
Mr. Heng also thanked the Khmer Rouge Tribunal for organizing this study tour for his students and he hoped that the ECCC would organize more programs for other students in this university. "Request further visits to historical sites for the sake of gaining knowledge that we have not gone through and understand" said Heng.
The today study tour, all students visited the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, Choeung Ek Genocide Center, Win Win Monument, and a briefing by the Public Affairs Officer of the Khmer Rouge Tribunal on the importance of the achievements of the ECCC and the causes of the trials of crimes committed during the Democratic Kampuchea regime.
The study tour is organized every week for students, youth and the general public for the remembrance and participate in preventing the return of the atrocities of the Khmer Rouge regime. Since the beginning of court proceedings to 2023, more than half a million national and international public have participated in the study tour coordinated by the Public Affairs Section of the Khmer Rouge Tribunal.
