The Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) organized a study tour for 150 students from Hun Sen Khchao High School in Kang Meas District, Kampong Cham Province on 24 May 2023. The purpose of this study tour is to encourage young people to better understand and remember the tragedy of the Cambodian people under the Khmer Rouge regime and the trial of crimes committed during that brutal regime.
The students were welcomed and presented by the Public Affairs Officer of the Khmer Rouge Tribunal about the trial of former Khmer Rouge leaders and the achievements of the ECCC, visiting and learning on Cambodian history at Win Win Memorial, the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum and the Choeung Ek Genocide Center.
John Socheat, a teacher leading the group, said that the program is much crucial for all students so that they know the history that Cambodians experienced and participate in preventing Cambodia from falling back to its dark history. The teacher added that this program also gave students to understand and see the achievements under the leadership of the Royal Government of Cambodia for Cambodians to be peace, prosperous and development. Socheat also expressed her gratitude to the Royal Government of Cambodia for leading the country to peace and develop in all sectors and thanked the Khmer Rouge tribunal for organizing this study tour.
The students, participation in the ECCC study tour program today, received a wealth information and knowledge through visiting the Win Win Memorial, Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, Choeung Ek Genocide Center, and a presentation on the legacy and trials on the former senior leaders of the brutal Khmer Rouge regime.
The ECCC organizes weekly study tour program for students, youth and the general public to promote remembrance and participation in preventing the atrocities such the Khmer Rouge regime. From 2009 to 2023, more than half a million national and international public participated in the outreach study tour program under the coordination by the Public Affairs Section of the Khmer Rouge Tribunal.
