Trial Chamber adjourns for judicial recess in Case 002

The Trial Chamber of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) today adjourned for a judicial recess, thereby concluding the first Case 002 trial session of 2012. During the recess the Trial Chamber will prepare for the next trial session.  Trial Chamber hearings in Case 002 against the defendants Khieu Samphan, Nuon Chea and Ieng Sary will resume on 12 March 2012. 

Since the commencement of the opening statements in Case 002 on 21 November 2011, 20,257 visitors have traveled to the ECCC to attend hearings in this case.  Among this number are students, NGO representatives, international visitors, and members of the general public brought through the court’s outreach efforts.  In addition, an average of 71 unique users per day followed the court proceedings through live video streaming provided by the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia. The live video streaming is still in a test phase, and is currently only available in English.
Since the commencement of the opening statements, there have been 33 days of Case 002 Trial Chamber hearings.  



In addition to the Accused Persons, two civil parties and 5 witnesses have been questioned during this period.  The Case File in Case 002 currently comprises 564,000 pages.
