Victim Support Section and Civil Party Lead Co-Lawyers Hold a Meeting with Focal Persons of Civil Parties in Case 002

Phnom Penh: On 27 July 2023, Victim Support Section and Civil Party Lead Co-Lawyers of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) hold a meeting with forty-four focal persons of Civil Parties in case 002 from the provinces of Kandal, Prey Veng, Svay Rieng, and Takeo under the chairmanship of H.E. Kranh Tony, Secretary of State of the Office of the Council of Ministers and Acting Director of Administration of the ECCC. The main objectives included: 1) to provide the updates on case 002/02 and ECCC’s work during the residual phase, 2) to impart key messages received in the meeting and to distribute the books of summary judgments in case 002/01 and case 002/02 and certificates of appreciation to Civil Parties through focal persons.  

H.E. Kranh Tony addressed the meeting by highlighting the important roles of focal persons in helping coordinate Civil Parties to take part in various ECCC’s events and giving the brief updates on judicial proceedings and the current situations of the ECCC during a residual phase. He also emphasized the important existence of Khmer Rouge Tribunal in Cambodia, the official recognition of victimhood, and the findings of the truth and justice for Cambodian people; and added that the impacts of Khmer Rouge Tribunal have been beneficial for both Cambodia and other countries in the world.

After receiving judicial updates from Lead Co-Lawyers and Civil Party Lawyers, the focal persons were transported to the new ECCC’s residual building to have guided tours of a library and met with various officials. They were provided with cards for recognizing good cooperation with the ECCC and for continuous work, especially with regard to the support of victims and information dissemination.

At closing, a focal person from Svay Rieng expressed thanks to the ECCC for inviting Civil Parties as well as focal persons to take part in many events, and vowed to deliver the entrusted messages, the books and certificates to Civil Parties living in her areas.

When leaving the ECCC, they carried packs of books of summary judgements and certificates to be distributed to Civil Parties living in their communities. The book contains information related to judicial proceedings and judgments of Case 002/01 and Case 002/02, lists of 90 testifiers and 3867 Civil Parties’ names, and other important messages and pictures related to Civil Parties and ECCC’s events.
