The Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) organized a study tour for more than 200 students from Prey Pnov High School in Pearang District, Prey Veng Province, March 15, 2023. The purpose of this study tour is to give students a chance to remember and gain a deeper understanding of the atrocities committed during the Dark Ages and to commemorate the victims of that regime.

Vong Rith, one of the 200 students from Prey Pnov High School in Pearang district, Prey Veng province, attended a study tour. The 12th grader said that he was very happy to participate in this study tour. He added that the program brought him as well as all high school classmates to gain a wealth knowledge in addition to reading Khmer Rouge history.

"For me, I think this study tour is very important because reading Khmer Rouge historical books in the classroom does not provide as much knowledge as we join in today study tour. In this program, we learn by seeing the real pictures and listening to the guides and officers from each historical site.” Said Rith. The 18-year-old added that understanding the dark history of Cambodia also contributes to preventing the recurrence of the genocidal regime.

Van Chanu, a grade 11 student from the same high school, made a similar point, saying that attending the tribunal's study tour would educate young people more about the atrocities committed by the Khmer Rouge. He said that the visit provides him the great opportunity to see images of the Khmer Rouge victims’ detaining, interrogating, torturing, and killing. According to the 11the grader, he wants students from other schools to come and participate in the study tour of the Khmer Rouge tribunal so that they can see and understand the history clearly.

The two young men as well as the students praised and appreciated the win-win policy of the Royal Government of Cambodia, which led the country to bring peace and social stability. The students also thanked the Khmer Rouge tribunal for organizing the program so that they could understand, visit the crime scene left over from the Khmer Rouge regime and see the development in Phnom Penh today.

The ECCC outreach study tour is organized weekly for students, youth, and the public, as part of the remembrance and participation in preventing the return of the atrocities of the Khmer Rouge regime. Since the first court proceedings until today,2023, more than half a million national and international public have participated in the outreach study tours under the coordination and organization of the Public Affairs Section of the Khmer Rouge Tribunal.
