Mr. Sorn Sakuon, a youth representative from Batheay district, thanks the Khmer Rouge Tribunal for organizing a program to bring youth and students to learn directly at Win Win Memorial, Choeung Ek Genocide Center, and Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum. For Mr. Sakuon, this visit gives the young generations a deep understanding of the atrocities of the Khmer Rouge and the sacrifices of prime minister Hun Sen in liberating the country from the genocidal regime.
The Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC), April 27, 2023, organized a study tour for 150 youth and students from Samdech Techo Hun Sen High School in Batheay District, Kampong Cham Province to visit Win Win Memorial, Choeung Ek Genocide Center, and Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum. So far, about 450 youth and students from Batheay have come to participate in the ECCC outreach study tours.
Mr. Sorn Sakuon, who co-led the youth group, expressed his gratitude to the Khmer Rouge tribunal for organizing this event for his local youth by stating that "I would like to thank all the working groups of the tribunal of the Khmer Rouge tribunal, which has organized study tour programs for youth to come and learn directly the historical sites. The visits allow our young students to remember, know and see with their own eyes what happened at those sites.
Sakuon added that through presentations from relevant officials, including the Public Affairs Officer of the Khmer Rouge Tribunal, the guides at the Win Win Memorial and the Tuol Sleng Museum provide the group a wealth knowledge on the trial of former Khmer Rouge leaders, the brutal torture and massacre of Cambodians by the Khmer Rouge, and the sacrifices of Cambodian leaders in liberating the country from genocidal regimes.
The ECCC outreach study tour is organized weekly for students, youth, and the public, as part of the remembrance and participation in preventing the return of the atrocities of the Khmer Rouge regime. Since the first court proceedings until today,2023, more than half a million national and international public have participated in the outreach study tours under the coordination by the Public Affairs Section of the Khmer Rouge Tribunal.
