Youth Representative: ECCC Study Tour Gives Youth a Better Understanding of Cambodia's Bitter History and Peace Building History

Oun Leang An, Batheay District Youth Representative, said that the study tour organized by the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) provides the younger generation with a better understanding of the Cambodia bitter and peacebuilding history.

This statement was made while Mr. Oun Leang An led about 150 youth from Samdech Techo Hun Sen Sandek High School and Hor Namhong Prey Nha High School in Batheay District, Kampong Cham Province, April 19, 2023, to participate in the Khmer Rouge Tribuanl outreach study tour.

In this study tour, the group was briefed by ECCC Public Affairs Officer on the importance and legacy of the trial of crimes committed during the Khmer Rouge regime, visited to Win Win Memorial, Choeung Ek Genocide Center, and Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum. The purpose of this outreach study tour is to make young people remember the tragedy of the Khmer Rouge regime, understand the achievements of the ECCC and the Cambodian liberation from the genocidal regime.

"This study tour is very important, especially for the younger generation, they learn many things from the history of Cambodia, both bitter history and history that led us to peace today." Said Leang An.

An added that a study tour to the Win Win Memorial provides students on the processing of the searching for peace, as well as national unity and the struggle to overthrow the Khmer Rouge regime by the Royal Government of Cambodia. And visiting to the Choeung Ek Genocide Center, and the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, the youth will understand and remembered the atrocities in the Khmer Rouge regime.

Mr. Leang An praised and thanked the Khmer Rouge tribunal for organizing this study tour for youth to better understand the history of Cambodia. He also thanked the Royal Government of Cambodia for leading this country to peace and develop in all sectors to this day.

The ECCC outreach study tour is organized weekly for students, youth, and the public, as part of the remembrance and participation in preventing the return of the atrocities of the Khmer Rouge regime. Since the first court proceedings until today,2023, more than half a million national and international public have participated in the outreach study tours under the coordination by the Public Affairs Section of the Khmer Rouge Tribunal.
