The public hearing on Ieng Thirith's fitness to stand trial on 30 - 31 August 2012 began with questioning of appointed medical experts Dr. John Campbell (New Zealand), Dr. Seena Fazel (United Kingdom) and Dr. Huot Lina (Cambodia) by the Trial Chamber and Ieng Thirith's Defence team. They also put questions to witness Professor Chak Thida, Accused Ieng Thirith's treating doctor. 395 people attended the trial proceedings on the first day.
