    The Victims Support Section of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) today convened a two-day forum in Battambang for 250 Civil Parties in the ECCC’s Case 002.  These Civil Parties come from across the northwest of the country, including Battambang, Banteay Meanchey and Pursat provinces.The Forum provides an opportunity for Civil Parties to learn about recent developments at the Court and about progress in their individual cases.     On 5 August, 2010 the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) started to produce 5,000 printed copies of the entire Duch’s verdict and 17,000 copies of the judgment summary in Khmer language. The publications are to be distributed to the public free of charge. Mr. REACH Sambath, the Head of the Public Affairs Section of the ECCC told reporters that the ECCC would be distributing these printed versions of the judgment to 24 provinces/municipalities, 188 districts, 1,621 communes, ministries, institutions, universities, high schools, libraries, NGOs, Civil Parties and the general public for the purpose of additional studies and better understanding of Case File 001 in which c...

    The ECCC has become an official sponsor of a Cambodian radio show which educates listeners about the traumatic impact of the Khmer Rouge regime and offers on-air counseling to Khmer Rouge survivors.The tribunal’s Victims Support Unit (VSS) will help fund the production and broadcasting costs of The Past in the Present, after signing an agreement with the programme’s producer, the Transcultural Psychological Organisation (TPO), on 22 July 2010.

    Every Tuesday and Thursday, the Public Affairs Section of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) brings a group of 300 villagers from the Cambodian countryside to visit the ECCC and the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum. On 25 March 2010, more than 300 villagers, including 150 Cham people, from Kampong Siem District, Kampong Cham province, participated in this outreach program. Even in remote villages, there is a great interest among regular Cambodians in visiting the Court and Tuol Sleng.     More than 7,000 students and teachers at Bak Touk high school in Phnom Penh were briefed by officials from the ECCC on 1 March 2010. The visit was part of a nationwide outreach program where court officials visit villages and schools all over Cambodia. The main goal with the outreach program is to increase awareness and understanding of the ECCC among regular Cambodians.

    Today the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) signed an agreement with the Hoover Institution, Stanford University and the War Crimes Studies Center of the University of California, Berkeley for the establishment of a ECCC Virtual Tribunal Legacy Project.The Virtual Tribunal will be a ground breaking way for the ECCC to digitally make available to the public all trial related materials such as decisions, filings, trial transcripts and videos of the court proceedings.     "We want to see justice done," was the overwhelming response of participants at a regional forum in Kampong Cham, 24-25 October, when they were asked why the wanted to participate in the trials before the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC). Over 170 Civil Party applicants from Kampong Cham, Prey Veng, Svey Rieng, Kratie and Stung Treng participated in the second regional forum organised by the Victims Unit of the ECCC.     113 villagers from Dam Be district in Kampong Cham province visited the ECCC and the Toul Sleng Genocide Museum on 13 October 2009 as a part of a new outreach program organized by the ECCC Public  Affairs Section.  The villagers were picked up by buses provided free of charge by the ECCC early in the morning,  before they were taken to Toul Sleng Genocide Museum, which is on the premises of what used to be the secret Khmer Rouge  prison S-21. At this particular day the participants received a two hour guided tour by Mr. Chum Mey, one of only seven known survivors of S-21.     A crew from United Nations Television visited the ECCC in September in order to make stories about Duch trial and the achievements of the Court up to now. More than 200 Civil Party applicants participated when the Victims Unit launched the first of several planned regional forums in Kampot in the last weekend of September.     As Case 001 draws to a close, and the ECCC Co-investigating judges have started to recognize more Civil Parties for case 002, the Victims Unit has launched a program of regional Civil Party forums, the first of which took place on Saturday and Sunday 26-27 September in Kampot. 195 Civil Party applicants from Kampot, Preah Sihanouk, Koh Kong, Kep and Takeo provinces joined together to receive an update on the processes of the court and the application process.     On Wednesday, 26 August 2009, the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) reached a new milestone when the number of visitors in attendance of Case 001 against Kaing Guek Eav, alias Duch exceeded 20,000. As of 26 August 2009, 20,250 visitors had attended the Duch-trial since it commenced on 30 March. This makes a daily average of 311 visitors. The total number of visitors includes visitors from 11 Cambodian provinces (Kandal, Kampomg Cham, Kam Pong Speu, Kampong Thom, Phnom Penh, Kampong Chahnaing, Kratie, Siem Reap, Pursat, Takeo and Kampot).     On Wednesday, 22 July 2009, the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) reached the benchmark of 12,000 visitors in attendance of Case 001 against Kaing Guek Eav, alias Duch since the trial began on 30 March 2009  Villagers lining up before attending the Duch-trial on 22 July 2009. During recent months, the Public Affairs Section has strengthened efforts to increase both outreach activities and visitor attendance at the court.  Due to targeted effective outreach through the use of radio broadcasts, the court has been able to provide to larger audience information about how to attend the court hearings.
