Eight ECCC Plenary Session Concludes

The ECCC’s 8th Plenary Session concluded today, having adopted the remainder of the amendments to the Internal Rules necessary to conclude the consolidation and streamlining of the Civil Party system commenced by previous plenaries.

Victims Support Section Convenes Civil Party Forum in Battambang

Duch's verdict to serves as reference for Kandal Provincial Court

In an official ceremony on 17 August 2010, all judicial staff at Kandal Provincial Court were given printed copies of the “Duch”-verdict, a document which will now become a valuable reference for judges, prosecutors and clerks of the court.  

Co-Prosecutors request indictment of Nuon Chea, Ieng Sary, Khieu Samphan and Ieng Thirith

Today the Co-Prosecutors filed their Final Submission in Case 002 with the Co-Investigating Judges. Under Sub-Rule 66(5) of the ECCC Internal Rules, once the Co-Prosecutors consider that the investigation has concluded, the Co-Prosecutors are required to issue a written, reasoned final submission within 45 days of receiving the Case File from the Co-Investigating Judges.

Today the Co-Prosecutors have filed a Notice of Appeal against the Judgement of the Trial Chamber of 26 July 2010, in which Kaing Guek Eav alias Duch was convicted and sentenced to a period of 30 years imprisonment.

ECCC to distribute the "Duch"-verdict nationwide

On 5 August, 2010 the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) started to produce 5,000 printed copies of the entire Duch’s verdict and 17,000 copies of the judgment summary in Khmer language. The publications are to be distributed to the public free of charge.

ECCC sponsors radio counseling show for Khmer Rouge survivors

The ECCC has become an official sponsor of a Cambodian radio show which educates listeners about the traumatic impact of the Khmer Rouge regime and offers on-air counseling to Khmer Rouge survivors.The tribunal’s Victims Support Unit (VSS) will help fund the production and broadcasting costs of The Past in the Present, after signing an agreement with the programme’s producer, the Transcultural Psychological Organisation (TPO), on 22 July 2010.

US Under-Secretary of State Visits the Khmer Rouge Tribunal

A visiting senior official of the US government on Saturday 17 July paid a visit to the Khmer Rouge tribunal to gain first-hand knowledge of the work of the tribunal, which is expected to hand down its first judgment on 26 July.

Case file in Case 002 forwarded to the Co-Prosecutors for final submission

The Co-Investigating Judges have today, pursuant to Internal Rule 66 (4), forwarded the case file in Case 002 to the Co-Prosecutors.  The Co-Prosecutors have a maximum of 45 days to file their final submission to the Co-Investigating Judges. After the receipt of the final submission from the Co-Prosecutors, the Co-Investigating Judges will issue a Closing Order in Case 002. The Closing Order will be either an indictment sending the case for trial or a dismissal of the case (partially or totally). The charged persons in Case 002 are currently Nuon Chea, Khieu Samphan, Ieng Sary, Ieng Thirith and Kaing Guek Eav. 

Japan donates US $ 2.26 million to pay Cambodian tribunal staff

The Japanese government has donated US $2.26 to the national side of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) after the pledging conference held in New York last 25 May 2010.

Germany pledges more financial support to maximise victims' participation in KR trials

On June 16, the German government, represented by its implementing agency German Technical Cooperation (GTZ), signed an agreement with the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) pledging an additional 400,000 Euros to the tribunal’s Victims Support Section (VSS) for the continuing improvement of victims’ participation in the Khmer Rouge trials.
