Japan makes a new contribution of US$ 1,120,000 to the ECCC

The Government of Japan has announced a new contribution of US$1,120,000 to the international component of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC). This contribution brings the total financial assistance provided by the Government of Japan to the ECCC (national and international components) to US$ 85 million approximately or 32% of the total contribution by donors, which makes it the largest donor to the ECCC.

Supreme Court Chamber quashes part of the convictions, affirms life imprisonment for Nuon Chea and Khieu Samphan in Case 002/01

On 23 November 2016, the Supreme Court Chamber of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) pronounced its judgement on appeals against the trial judgement in Case 002/01 against Nuon Chea, former Deputy Secretary of the Communist Party of Kampuchea, and Khieu Samphan, former Head of State of Democratic Kampuchea.

Public gallery to reopen Monday 31 October 2016

The Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC)wishes to inform the media and the general public that access tothe public gallery of the main courtroom will be reopenedas of Monday 31 October 2016. Access will be granted through the normal public entrance.Having closed the public entrance for three weeks due to flooding after heavy rains in early October, the ECCC is in now in a position to continue receiving visitors to the hearings in Case 002/02. Visitors should be aware that parking availability continues to be limited at the court.

High water levels bar public from visiting court!

The ECCC is not able to allow any public visitors to join the hearings at present, due to high water levels within the compound. An announcement will be made when the ECCC is able to accommodate public visitors at the court again.

Hearings in Case 002/02 regarding the Accused Nuon Chea and Khieu Samphan to resume on Monday 10 October 2016

The Trial Chamber of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) will resume the hearing of evidence in Case 002/02 regarding the Accused Nuon Chea and Khieu Samphan on Monday 10 October 2016 from 9am in the ECCC’s main courtroom.

ECCC closed on Friday 7 October

The ECCC will be closed on Friday 7 October 2016 due to high water levels within the compound. The  scheduled Case 002/02 trial hearing has accordingly been postponed. Staff and officials can be reached by mobile phone. Operations are expected to resume on Monday 10 October.

Appeal judgement in Case 002/01 scheduled for 23 November

The Supreme Court Chamber of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) has announced that it will pronounce its judgement on the appeals in Case 002/01 against Nuon Chea and Khieu Samphan on Wednesday, 23 November at 9:00 am in the main courtroom of the ECCC.

Government of India contributes US$50,000 to ECCC

The Government of India has announced a contribution of US$50,000 to the national component of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Court of Cambodia (ECCC). This installment brings the total financial assistance provided by India to US$1.050.000 million since the Court’s inception in 2006. “On behalf of the ECCC, we would like to express our gratitude for the support offered by the Government of India,” said Acting Director of Administration Tony Kranh and Deputy Director of Administration Knut Rosandhaug in a joint statement.

Trial Chamber to hear evidence on charges of forced marriage and rape

Starting 23 August 2016, the Trial Chamber of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) will hear evidence in the trial topic of Regulation of Marriage, including charges of forced marriage and rape during the period of Democratic Kampuchea. Eight Civil Parties, three witnesses, and two experts are currently scheduled to testify during this part of the trial in Case 002/02 of Khieu Samphan and Nuon Chea.

Hearing on August 8-10, 2016 cancelled. The hearing will start again on August 11, 2016.

Please be informed that the document hearings in Case 002/02 scheduled for 8,9 and 10 August 2016 have been postponed. The next public hearing will be testimonies of harm suffered by Civil Parties in relation to the fourth trial segment, security centres and internal purges, on Thursday 11 August at 09:00.

PRESS STATEMENT BY THE DEFENCE SUPPORT SECTION

In light of recent comments that appeared in the local press in Phnom Penh and that have been attributed to a certain expert who recently testified before the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (“ECCC”), the Defence Support Section (“DSS”) wishes to underscore the importance of an independent and vigorous Defence in ensuring the fairness of trial proceedings.

The Court Report July 2016

The Court Report issue for July 2016 covers the month of June at the ECCC. The first three pages include articles featuring news from July, including the beginning of hearings about internal purges.

Case file 004/01 forwarded for final submissions

On 27 July 2016, the Co-Investigating Judges issued a forwarding order under Internal Rule 66(4) requesting the Co-Prosecutors to file their final submission. Under Internal Rule 66(5), the Co- Prosecutors now have up to three months to file their submission. After that, the Defence will be given adequate time to respond to the Co-Prosecutors’ final submission. The Co-Investigating Judges will issue the Closing Order in due course after having received submissions from both sides. 

EU releases 2016 grant allocation to the ECCC

Implementing the pledge announced last year for a total support of EUR 8.9 million to the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) for the period 2015 to 2016, the European Union (EU) has proceeded with the release of the final grant installment of EUR 2.9 million, of which EUR 1.5 million will support the international component and EUR 1.4 million will support the operations of the national component of the ECCC.
