Phnom Penh, Cambodia - The Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) on 12 March 2024 co-hosted the East Asia & Oceania Regional Round of the John H. Jackson Moot Court Competition 22nd Edition over international trade laws related with the National University of Management (NUM iLaw) and European Law Students’ Association (ELSA), and with technical support from the World Trade Organization (WTO).
Nine teams from Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Singapore, Taiwan, and Vietnam participated in the East Asia & Oceania Regional Round held in Cambodia from 9-13 March 2024. Four teams advanced to the Semi-Final and Final Round organized at the courtrooms of the ECCC Resource Centre. Two teams who won the first place and second place of the East Asia & Oceania Regional Round will advance to and will compete at the International Round held at the headquarter of the WTO in Geneva, Switzerland.
H.E. Tony Kranh, Acting Director of the ECCC said, “The hosting of the John. H Jackson regional round today marks a significant milestone as Cambodia hosts its first regional moot court event. The ECCC is pleased to have received all students and their coaches to visit and compete in the Semi-Final and the Final Round at the seat of the ECCC today. The ECCC congrats all the participating students on their efforts through this moot court competition and looks forward to actively supporting such initiatives during a residual phase”.
Mr. Shashank Kumar, representative of WTO, expressed the utmost thanks to the ECCC for this wonderful partnership. He added that, “I importantly thanks to the ECCC because it has been an honor to be here at this courtroom, and at the premises of the ECCC. It is such an amazing institution and this kind of work done is truly fascinating”.
Mr. Maciej Lodzinski, representative of the European Law Students’ Association (ELSA) said, “Obviously, we are happy to have the semi-final and final round of the East Asia & Oceania Regional Round competition organized at the premises of the ECCC. We would like to thank you [the ECCC] very much for working on the project with us and being able to accommodate us here”.
In mid-February 2024, the ECCC also co-hosted the final rounds of moot court competition on the right to a fair trial with the Raoul Wallenberg Institute (RWI) and the Center for the Study of Humanitarian Law (CSHL).
