ECCC, National University of Battambang and 'Southeast Asian University Partnership of GIZ/CPS organization have signed a Memorandum of Understanding for Dissemination and education of the ECCC achivements over the past 15 years in higher education

Phnom Penh: On 21 June 2023 in the ECCC Resource Centre, the signing ceremony of the Memorandum of Understanding was held between the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC), represented by H.E. Kranh Tony, Secretary of State of the Office of the Council Ministers and Acting Director of Administration of the ECCC, National University of Battambang, represented by H.E. Sok Khon, NUBB Rector, and University of Southeast Asian Partnership (SAUP), GIZ / CPS organization, represented by Ms. Sadie O 'Mahoney, Regional Program Coordinator (Cambodia, Philippines and East Timor).

The purpose of the Memorandum of Understanding is to disseminate, educate and research to (1) promote the dissemination of information about the ECCC’s proceedings, achievements, and legacyin the field of higher education, (2) facilitate the development and adoption of higher education curriculum for undergraduate and graduate programs in social sciences, including peace and conflict studies; (3) cooperate and coordinate in the development and implementation of practical education tools and methods for teachers, learners, and researchers in the aforementioned fields; and (4) encourage exchange study visits, internships, and other learning opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students in peace and conflict studies, faculty researchers, and lecturers who carry out teaching.

“ The signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) is an implementation of the residual functions of the ECCC, in which Royal Government of Cambodia and the United Nations have agreed on the "Addendum on the Transitional Arrangements and the Completion of Work of the Extraordinary Chambers" for an additional three years, from 2023 to 2025, including: (A) Some legal works, including the management and dissemination of the ECCC’s archives; (B) Education and dissemination of the achievements and legacy of the ECCC and monitoring the enforcement of moral and collective reparations to civil parties,” said H.E Tony Kranh, Secretary of State of the Office of the Council Ministers, and Acting Director of Administration of the ECCC.

Both H.E Sok Khorn, Rector of the National University of Battambang and Ms. Sadie O 'Mahoney highly appreciate the cooperation with the Khmer Rouge Tribunal on education and research.

This Memorandum of Understanding between the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia and the University of Southeast Asia (SAUP) of GIZ / CPS is the second Memorandum of Understanding signed by the Khmer Rouge Tribunal with its partners. The Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in research and historical education of Democratic Kampuchea, signed on 28 April 2023, identifies, and sets out several projects, including: 1). The lessons on the ECCC are incorporated into the curriculum of peace and post-conflict studies. 2). The participatory learning methods and approaches to transitional justice will be developed. 3). The capacity for primary sources and archival research on Khmer Rouge history will be established. 4). The extra-curricular learning experience on transitional justice was facilitated and implemented.
