The Court Report for August 2014 issued
The August 2014 issue of the Court Report features the verdict in Case 002/01 against Nuon Chea and Khieu Samphan, which was pronounced on 7 August 2014. The accused were found guilty of crimes against humanity and sentenced to life imprisonment. The Report discusses civil party reparation projects for Case 002/01 and media reactions to the verdict. Supreme Court Chamber upholds severance of Case 002/02
Today, the Supreme Court Chamber of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) dismissed an appeal from Khieu Samphan requesting annulment of the Trial Chamber’s severance order for Case 002/02.
Further Initial Hearing in Case 002/02 will be held on 30 July 2014
Following the Initial Hearing held in June 2011,the Trial Chamber of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) will conduct a further Initial Hearing in Case 002/02 against Khieu Samphan and Nuon Chea on Wednesday, 30 July 2014 at 09:00 in the main courtroom of the ECCC. Planning continues for Case 002/02 reparation requests
Having successfully conducted the Stakeholders Consultation on Case 002/02 Reparation last month, the Victims Support Section (VSS) and the Civil Party Lead Co-Lawyers Section (CPLCLS) will host a Civil Parties Consultation on Case 002/02 Reparations, which will take place on 21 July 2014 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Cambodia-Korea Cooperation Centre (CKCC), Royal University of Phnom Penh, Russian Federation Boulevard, Khan Toul Kork, Phnom Penh.
Seminar series in international criminal law and Human Rights for Law students
The Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC), in cooperation with the Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law (RWI), is hosting a seminar series on the topics of international criminal law and human rights law. The aim is to increase awareness and knowledge of these subject areas among law students and teachers/researchers in Cambodia, as well as to foster interaction between ECCC jurists and academia, with a view to facilitating research.
The Court Report for July 2014 issued
The July 2014 edition of the Court Report features the visit of the Principal Donors Group to the ECCC. The Court Report also features articles on the recent donations of Malaysia, Australia and Sweden, as well as the story of a couple of interns sharing about their experience at the ECCC. Information about the preliminary stakeholder consultation held on 11 June 2014 has also been added to the Court Report. In addition, judicial updates of each section are also placed.
Sweden announces new contribution of SEK 30 million
The Government of Sweden has announced that it will make a new contribution of SEK 30 million (approximately US$4.5 million) to the international component of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) for 2014-2015.With the new contribution, Sweden’s financial assistance to the ECCC will exceed US$10 million. Sweden is a key financial backer of the ECCC and is a member of the Principal Donors Group.
Malaysia contributes US50,000 to the ECCC
The Government of Malaysia has contributed US$50,000 to the national component of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC). Malaysia is a new donor to the ECCC, and made this contribution in response to an appeal by the United Nations Secretary-General, Ban Kimoon, and the Royal Government of Cambodia. The international community was asked to urgently come forward with pledges of financial support to the ECCC.
ECCC and Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a Memorial in Tuol Sleng Museum
The Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) and the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts (MoCFA) will sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 10 July 2014 to establish a memorial in Tuol Sleng Museum, in commemoration of the victims who died there during the Khmer Rouge regime from 1975-1979. The ceremony will take place in Tuol Sleng and will be presided over by H.E. Kranh Tony, Acting Director of Administration Office of the ECCC, and His Excellency Chuch Phoeurn, Secretary of State of the MoCFA.
Australia Pledges AU$3.25 Million
The Government of Australia has confirmed that it will make a new single contribution of AU$3.25 million (approximately US$3 million) to the international component of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC). With this new pledge, the Government of Australia’s total contribution to the ECCC will exceed AU$26 million. Australia is the second largest donor to the ECCC, and it has supported the Court since its inception.
Statement by the Principal Donors Group for the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia
Today New York-based representatives of the Principal Donors Group (PDG) for the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) completed an important 3-day visit to Phnom Penh. The visit by the PDG – a group of key contributing countries working with the UN to support the ECCC – reinforced its commitment to the ECCC and the pursuit of justice for victims of atrocities of the Khmer Rouge regime.
The Court Report June 2014 issued
The June 2014 edition of the Court Report features the upcoming judgement in Case 002/01, which will be pronounced on 7 August 2014 in the main courtroom of the ECCC. Case 002/01 is the first of at least two trials against the accused, Nuon Chea and Khieu Samphan. The charges focus on alleged crimes against humanity related to the forced movement of population and the alleged execution of Khmer Republic soldiers. The Court Report also features information on the recently announced initial hearing for Case 002/02, which will take place on 30 July 2014.
ECCC weekly radio programme resumes on 19 June 2014
The Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) will resume its weekly radio programme on 19 June 2014, following a two-month break. The radio programme, “Khmer Rouge Leaders on Trial”, airs every Thursday on Bayon FM95 from 12:00 – 13:00.Each programme presents the major developments from the week’s hearings and features guest speakers from the court. Listeners are also invited to call in and ask questions to officials from the ECCC.
Initial Hearing in Case 002/02 scheduled for 30 July 2014
The Trial Chamber has announced that an initial hearing in Case 002/02 against Khieu Samphan and Nuon Chea will be held in in the Main Courtroom of the ECCC on Wednesday 30 July 2014 at 09:00. If necessary, the hearing will continue on Thursday 31 July.

Planning begins for Case 002/02 reparation requests
Having successfully submitted the Civil Parties’ final claim for reparations before the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) in Case 002/01, preparations for the development of reparation requests for the next trial, Case 002/02, are now set to begin.
Judgement in Case 002/01 to be pronounced on 7 August 2014
The Trial Chamber of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) has announced that the judgement in Case 002/01 against Khieu Samphan and Nuon Chea will be pronounced at 09:00 am on Thursday 7 August 2014 in the ECCC main courtroom. If convictions are entered, decisions on sentencing and civil party reparation requests will also be delivered.
Marie Guiraud appointed as new Civil Party Lead Co-Lawyer
Ms. Marie Guiraud of France has been appointed as new international Civil Party Lead Co- Lawyer at the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC). Her appointment is effective 1 June 2014.
UN General Assembly approves US$ 15.5 million funding reserve
The United Nations General Assembly has authorized a subvention of US$ 15.5 million to the international component of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC).
Contribution from Norway to be directed to the national component of ECCC
The Government of Norway has approved that its recent financial contribution of 6 million NOK (approximately US$ 1 million) can be redirected from the international component to the national component of the ECCC to meet the salary costs of the national staff.
The Court Report for May 2014 issued
The May issue of the Court Report features a focus on the crime sites and factual allegations that will form the basis of the second trial in Case 002 following the Trial Chamber’s severance decision. Stories of the fitness to stand trial of both Accused in Case 002 are also included. The newsletter also carries articles on study tours conducted at the ECCC and the support secured for the reparation projects lead by the Victims Support Section and the Civil Party lead Co-Lawyers, as well as the recent subvention authorized by The United Nations General Assembly.
Khieu Samphan and Nuon Chea found fit to stand trial
In two separate decisions issued on 25 April 2014, the Trial Chamber found that both Khieu Samphan and Nuon Chea are fit to stand trial. The decisions were made after the two accused perssons had been examined by three appointed medical experts in March 2014. The three experts appointed by the Trial Chamber were Dr. Seena FAZEL (United Kingdom), Dr. CHAN Kin Ming and Dr. HUOT Lina (Cambodia).
