Press Briefing in advance of Trial Chamber’s hearing in Case 002/02

The Public Affairs Section of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) has the honour of inviting representatives of media to a press briefing in advance of Trial Chamber’s hearing in Case 002/02 against Khieu Samphan and Nuon Chea which will resume on 27 July 2015. The Trial Chamber will shift its focus to Trapeang Thma Dam in the Northwest Zone, the third and final worksite in Case 002/02. The press briefing will take place on Thursday 23 July 2015 from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. at Bophana Audiovisual Resource Center, located at 64, 200 Oknha Men, Phnom Penh.

Press briefing in advance of the appeal hearings in Case 002/01

The Public Affairs Section of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) has the honor of inviting representatives of national and international media to a press briefing in advance of the commencement of appeal hearings in Case 002/01 against Khieu Samphan and Nuon Chea. The press briefing will take place on Tuesday 30 June 2015 from 10:00 – 11:00 at Phnom Penh Hotel, No.53 Monivong Boulevard. There will be simultaneous interpretation in Khmer and English.

Distribution of Trial Chamber Judgement in Case 002/01

The Office of Administration of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) will distribute the printed version of the Trial Chamber’s judgement in Case 002/01 to around 300 students from different universities in Phnom Penh on 12 May 2015 at the ECCC main Courtroom at 09:00. The distribution ceremony will be presided over by Acting Director of the Office of Administration H.E. Kranh Tony. There will also be a Questions and Answers session related to the latest developments of the ECCC.    

ECCC visits former Khmer Rouge strongholds

9 districts in Oddar Meancheay, Battambang and Pailin, all located in former Khmer Rouge strongholds, were visited by representatives from the Office of the Co-Investigating Judges and the Public Affairs Section between 12 and 22 November 2014. In close co-operation with the respective District Governors, the ECCC organized nine public forums in Anlong Veng, Trapeang Prasat, Banteay Ampil, Samlaut, Pailin, Sala Krau, Sampov Lun, Phnim Proek and Kamrieng. Each forum was attended by an average of 300 people who came to learn more about the ongoing court proceedings.

ECCC weekly radio programme resumes on 19 June 2014

The Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) will resume its weekly radio programme on 19 June 2014, following a two-month break. The radio programme, “Khmer Rouge Leaders on Trial”, airs every Thursday on Bayon FM95 from 12:00 – 13:00.Each programme presents the major developments from the week’s hearings and features guest speakers from the court. Listeners are also invited to call in and ask questions to officials from the ECCC.

Tentative schedule of Case 002 hearing for 2013

The Trial Chamber has announced a tentative schedule of Case 002 trial hearings for 2013. The chamber will reconvene on 8 January after a two-week recess, and will sit for alternating periods of three and four days per week until further notice. •&nbsp;Week of 8 January: Tuesday 8th – Friday 11th (4 days)•&nbsp;Week of 14 January: Monday 14th – Wednesday 16th (3 days) In addition, three judicial recesses are now scheduled for the first half year of 2013: •&nbsp;Monday 25 February – Friday 1 March 2013<

New video outlines outreach at universities and high schools

This new video highlights part of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia's nationwide outreach campaign which aims to educate students at high schools and and universities across Cambodia. Since October 2009, staff members from the court have given lectures to more than 60,000 students.

New video: Case 002 on Trial - Part 1

The Public Affairs Section's latest video production, Case 002 on Trial: Part 1, explores the first part of Case 002 since the trial began in November 2011. The video outlines the charges against the three Accused, Ieng Sary, Nuon Chea, and Khieu Samphan, and includes segments from the Co-Prosecutors’ opening statements which were heard on November 21.

S-21 survivors first to receive copies of Case 001 Appeal Judgement

Three living survivors of the S-21 prison, Bou Meng, Chum Mey and Norng Chan Phal as well as five Civil Parties received printed copies of the Supreme Court Chamber Appeal Judgement in Case 001 against Kaing Guek Eav alias Duch Friday 18 May 2012 at the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum in Phnom Penh. This marked the start of a campaign where the Public Affairs Section and the Victims Support Section will distribute copies of the Appeal Judgement as well as a compilation of statements of apology made by Kaing Guek Eav during the proceedings to audiences across Cambodia.

Volunteer Brings More than 6,000 Cambodians to ECCC

69-year-old Mr. Kham Lun, a survivor of the Khmer Rouge regime, is well known among the villagers in his home province of Siem Reap. Since 2009, he has been disseminating information about the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC), and has helped bring more than 6,000 visitors to the court.

ECCC Cooperates with Cambodian Media to Disseminate Compilation of Statements of Apologies

In order to make the compilation of statements of apology and acknowledgments of responsibility made by Kaing Guek Eav alias Duch more accessible to the Cambodian public, the ECCC Public Affairs Section has entered into cooperation with several Cambodian newspapers, websites, and radio and TV stations to publish the compilation in full or in summary, free of charge, as a service to their readers and viewers.&nbsp;The distribution of the compilation follows the decision on the appeals in Case 001 pronounced on 3 February 2012, in which the Supreme Court Chamber affirm

ECCC surpasses 100,000 visitors milestone

&nbsp;&nbsp;With a total of 44,543 visitors during 2011, the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) have surpassed the milestone of receiving more than 100,000 visitors since the commencement of its first trial in February 2009. A total of 111,543 persons visited the ECCC in the period 16 February 2009 - 31 December 2011.&nbsp;&nbsp;The numbers includes visitors to public hearings and participants in the ECCC Study Tour Programme. This is a one-day educational program where the ECCC brings people from all over Cambodia to visit Toul Sleng Genocide museum, the Choeung Ek Killing Fields Memorial Site and to the ECCC. ECCC Weekly Radio Show “Khmer Rouge on Trial” Begins

The Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia launches a weekly radio show, “Khmer Rouge on Trial,” on Thursday 24 November 2011. It will air every Thursday evening from 5:15 – 6:15 pm on AM 918 KHZ and FM 105.75 MHZ.The radio programme provides an opportunity for the public to interact with court officials and deepen their understanding of Case 002, the trial of three Khmer Rouge leaders -- Nuon Chea, Ieng Sary and Khieu Samphan. They are indicted for genocide, crimes against humanity and grave breaches of the 1949 Geneva Conventions.

Kreung People from Ratanakiri Learn about Khmer Rouge Tribunal

“I was so shocked when I saw piles of skulls and mass graves at Tuol Sleng prison and at the Cheung Ek killing field. I also lost some relatives during the Khmer Rouge regime. That is the reason I came to the court; I wanted to know how the trial is progressing,” said Mr. Kim Pring Rai, one of over 400 Kreungs from La-ok commune, O-chum district, Ratanakkiri that visited the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) on 15 September 2011. This is the first time this Kreung ethnic group has visited the court.&nbsp;

ECCC Reaches Out to Buddhist Monks

“Trials alone, cannot foster the reconciliation necessary to heal wounds of the past. Kampot commune council members seek information for constituents

More than 350 commune council members from Kampot province visited the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) on 12 July 2011. They came to study and gain understanding of the process of prosecuting &nbsp;senior leaders of the Khmer Rouge and those alleged to be most responsible for serious crimes committed between 17 April 1975 and 6 January 1979. They were determined to share the information and knowledge acquired with their constituents once they returned back to their villages.

New appointments in the Public Affairs Section

The Office of Administration of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) would like to announce some changes made to fill vacancies and to strengthen the Public Affairs Section of the ECCC.&nbsp;&nbsp;Mr. DIM Sovannarom, who until recently served as Press Officer, will be Officer in Charge of the Public Affairs Section.&nbsp;In an effort to further strengthen the public information, media and outreach work of the ECCC Mr.

Students from Samaki High School and National Institute for Education had a long list of questions for ECCC Public Affairs Officers visiting their respective schools on Friday 29 April 2011, a clear sign that the Cambodian youth is interested in learning more about the ongoing Khmer Rouge Trials.

People from Anlong Veng confront the past

“I’m glad to welcome former Khmer Rouge members from Along Veng today. Many of these people did not really believe what happened here (in S-21) was true, and&nbsp; some of them did believe, but was not aware about the enormous extent of the atrocities. Today, they had the opportunity to come to see with their own eyes, and that’s make me happy,” said Mr. Chum Mey (80), one of only twelve known survivors from the S-21 prison.

Residents from former Khmer Rouge stronghold visit Toul Sleng and ECCC

Walking slowly out of the first room of building A of Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, the former S-21 Security Center of Khmer Rouge regime, Chea Ron, who had travelled a long way from Pailin province, looked upset as she told her friend, “My brother disappeared here.”

ECCC to distribute the "Duch"-verdict nationwide

On 5 August, 2010 the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) started to produce 5,000 printed copies of the entire Duch’s verdict and 17,000 copies of the judgment summary in Khmer language. The publications are to be distributed to the public free of charge.

ECCC launches new outreach program

113 villagers from Dam Be district in Kampong Cham province visited the ECCC and the Toul Sleng Genocide Museum on 13 October 2009 as a part of a new outreach program organized by the ECCC Public Affairs Section.
